Start your UX Strategy with Why before you ask What or How.

Do you know your Why? The purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to do what you do?

Very few people or companies can clearly articulate WHY they do WHAT they do. When I say WHY, I dont mean to make money—that’s a result. By WHY, I mean what is your purpose, cause or belief? WHY does your company exist? WHY do you get out of bed every morning? And WHY should anyone care?”

Why?

It’s a simple question, really. Why do you do what you do? Unless you’re an astronaut, it’s not the work we do that inspires us. It’s finding purpose and connecting it to your passion and work to stay motivated and makes us smarter, better, and happier.

My Why

My “why” is to make people’s lives better through good design and positive user experiences.

In the last 15 years of doing web design, I’ve learned a lot of lessons. But there’s one thing I’ve learned that I need that variety for job satisfaction. A job where I can apply my creative and technical skills to bring ideas to life is incredibly rewarding.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. – Steve Jobs

Start by building a foundation that answers “Why” before you ask “What” or “How.” Knowing your why is the best way to stay motivated and to inspire you to do what you do.

Start With Why

The genius of this insight is Simon Sinek, who explains this in his Ted Talks episode, “Start With Why.” Sinek set out to discover why companies like Apple have been able to achieve success while others have failed.

Simon Sinek’s TED talk is an inspiring reminder of how acting with a goal in our lives can lead to success.
